Whangarei District Council

About Us

Whangarei District Council is a key player in ensuring that Whangārei and its communities continue to prosper. We are charged with providing local government services to around 98,300 people in the Whangārei District, managing $1.5bn of community, waste, water, and transport assets, as well as land use in the district, which stretches from Langs Beach in the south to Bland Bay in the north.

We believe every employee at WDC has a key role to play in making our district an awesome place to live. We do that by giving superb service to our customers; we do it by working together as a group; we do it by building a culture where we can all contribute our ideas; and we do it by focusing on our outcomes. About the role

As our new Distribution Technician in our Water team, you'll be the public interface between the water network and our customers. This is the kind of role where you can demonstrate your great problem solving and customer focus as well as your technical and engineering skills.

You'll play a key part in supporting water distribution across the community. Your new team is professional and experienced and will be happy to share their knowledge and ideas with you so that you can grow your skills and abilities and progress your career.

Customer interaction and service delivery is a key part of this role. You'll approve all applications for water meters, help customers with technical issues, problem solve and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.

Overall your role will be:

  • Technical support and advice
  • Liaise with and manage customers for water and meter related enquires
  • Deal with contractors and their service delivery, including some finance and budgets
  • Support the management of the distribution network, including monitoring, inspections, quality control and health and safety
  • Work on projects like network upgrades and installations
  • Support the management of the water network assets
  • Check and manage compliance issues.

For success in this role, its more important that you are technically capable than qualified, but a trade certificate or Diploma could be helpful. Your work experience should cover practical engineering and ideally some reticulation maintenance experience. It would be handy if you have a knowledge of water metering and control valves, but not essential. You will have to be good with IT, especially Word and Excel. You'll be able to tell us about how calm and confident you are under pressure, how much you enjoy working with customers who have lots of questions and take pride in a job well done. Your attention to detail and record keeping skills will be well polished and you'll be happy to chuck on your boots and get into a hole to check installations.

What can we offer?

In recognition for the skills and experience you will bring to Council, a competitive salary is offered, along with other benefits such as flexible working arrangements, health and life insurance, excellent support for ongoing learning and contributions to your professional memberships.

Ready to apply?

If you are ready to embark on this exciting journey with us, please send through your C.V and a compelling cover letter outlining why you're a great fit for this role!

We understand not all applicants will meet all our preferred criteria. Don't be discouraged. Please highlight any transferrable skills and life experience you can confidently offer in equal contribution.
